Household Hazardous Waste

The Regional Planning Commission recognizes the importance of keeping hazardous waste and toxic chemicals out of our water supplies. To do this, we are committed to providing disposal options for households that are safe and convenient.

This is the only official information source for the UVLSRPC-led regional HHW collections. AI-generated search results may not be accurate.

UVLSRPC contracts with a hazardous waste disposal service to collect household hazardous waste from towns throughout our region. These collections happen several times in varying locations throughout the year. Many towns choose to cover the cost of disposal for a small annual amount for their residents. If your household is located within one of the following towns, you may bring up to 5 gallons/25 pounds of household hazardous waste to any of our regional collections throughout the year, free of charge. If your town is not listed, reach out to your town office to ask about joining next season.

If you do not live in one of these towns, then there is a $35 fee to dispose of up to 25 pounds or 5 gallons of waste. ALL BUSINESSES AND THOSE WITH MORE THAN 5 GALLONS / TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS MUST PRE-REGISTER 2 WEEKS BEFORE EVENT BY CALLING 603-448-1680 OR EMAILING TJOSEPHSON@UVLSRPC.ORG FOR A PRICE QUOTE. NO EXCEPTIONS. Residents with more than 5 gallons/25 pounds of household hazardous waste may be charged a fee for the excess depending on the amount of waste brought to the collection. Please call to pre-register and get a price quote if you have a large amount of HHW materials.

When attending a collection, please place all waste in the trunk/bed of your vehicle. Do not exit your vehicle at the collection site.

Latex Paint Alert: Please do NOT bring latex paint to HHW collections.  It is not considered hazardous. Latex paint brought to a collection will be sent back home with you.

Please note: Lebanon collection is NOT at the DHMC campus but off Etna Rd near FedEx and Dartmouth Coach. Please follow signs for directions day of event.

Commercial Collections:

Small businesses and institutions are welcome to attend HHW Collections.  A small business is defined as a business that produces 220 pounds or less of hazardous waste per month.  This is about one-half of a 55-gallon barrel.  We cannot take hazardous waste from anyone who generates more than this, but we can help you figure out how to dispose of it. 

They must pre-register with the coordinating sponsor at least three weeks in advance of the collection event.  A fee will be determined prior to the event which will be due before or at the event. 

On-site collection arrangements may be made directly with the sponsor’s waste hauler or any licensed hauler when there is a large quantity of waste, or it cannot be safely transported to a collection site.  You can obtain a list of licensed hazardous waste haulers from NH Department of Environmental Services for New Hampshire and VT Waste Management Division for ANR for Vermont.

School Collections

Schools are welcome to our HHW collections with pre-registration at least two weeks before the collection event.

To participate, contact Tim Josephson at 603-448-1680 or tjosephson@uvlsrpc.org to indicate interest.  You will then submit an inventory of materials for disposal to obtain a cost estimate for disposal.  Please specify each chemical  item and the quantity of each.  If a 20 ounce container is half full, list this as 10 ounces.  Estimates are acceptable.  Please indicate on the inventory list if the container is broken, leaking, has exterior contamination, or is otherwise compromised.

When delivering, please use the following instructions for your safety!

SAFE DELIVERY: Deliver wastes in two loads with each chemical class within the two loads packed separately:

SAFE PACKING: Pack each chemical class of material (e.g. acids, inorganic salts) in separate transport containers with sealing lids such as a 5-gallon bucket with lid or a plastic tote with a tight sealing lid.  You can transport multiple containers of the same chemical class if they will not all fit in one transport container.  Put vermiculite around and under each chemical container within the transport container.  Do not substitute vermiculite with packing peanuts. About 2″ on the bottom of the packing container and around each chemical container so they don’t bump each other.  Do not cover the tops of the chemical containers with vermiculite.  If the lid of a chemical for disposal is cracked or there is contamination on the exterior of the chemical contain, put each chemical container within a zip lock bag and close the bag before packing.

SAFE QUANTITY: Do not bring more than 100 pounds in a vehicle.  This is also for your safety.

New ideas and new faces keep us vibrant! Represent your municipalities’ needs and join us. We’d love to have you add your thoughts. Here are some ways to lend a hand:

• Volunteer a couple hours helping out at a Saturday morning event. See the HHW Collection Schedule for when and where they are happening.
• Volunteer a couple hours at an Outreach Event letting people know how to avoid toxic products and how to handle household hazardous waste.  Got ideas for other events?  Please let us know.  We may be able to do outreach at your Old Home Day or other event.
