Solid Waste Management
Management of solid waste can be a significant financial burden on rural communities. In addition, communities must deal with changing State and Federal regulations in the management of various materials such as electronics, appliances, yard waste and hazardous waste.
UVLSRPC assists communities in meeting these challenges through assistance with composting, recycling, and disposal. The commission coordinates regular transfer station attendant lunches to build relationships and share knowledge about markets and management methods for the various materials that are disposed of at local transfer stations.
Food Scraps Diversion
Unwanted food makes its way to our landfills 96% of the time: The most undesirable route. Across this region, people, schools, communities, and municipal staff are working hard to implement better strategies for unwanted food to provide value rather than sunk costs.

Marek Bennett gave us the gift of COMPOST COMICS! A series of five comics that tell the story of Corey who saves the world by decomposing in a compost pile. It’s a fun and educational series that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. A great tool for our families, communities, and schools to make solving problems not only important, but fun! The comics are easy to print from our website and a fun activity to fold.
