Stormwater
Stormwater management is an effort to reduce runoff of rainwater and snow melt into streets, lawns, and other sites; and the improvement of water quality. Stormwater management is essential for the safety of residents, infrastructure, ecological functioning, and especially important where there are impervious surfaces such as roofs, pavement, and roads. Municipal, state, federal, and private partners all play a role in maintaining and improving the functioning of both human and natural systems.
Culvert Assessments: UVLSRPC provides a GIS-based culvert assessment program to map and prioritize culvert systems in need of improvements or maintenance, as well as spatial data maintenance and training for municipal staff. UVLSRPC also hosts residential stormwater workshops with interested communities to educate landowners on stormwater management best practices.
Green Stormwater Management Project: In 2025, UVLSRPC received a Long Island Sounds Futures Fund grant for municipalities in the watershed in our Region and across the river in Vermont. This grant fund seeks to achieve Nitrogen reductions within the Connecticut River watershed and reduce a “dead zone” within the Long Island Sound stemming from the river. Our project included: municipal regulations audits; determination of specific sites of concern in each of the 58 municipalities; engineering firm evaluation of sites to determine top 10 sites in New Hampshire for shovel-ready designs; on-site GSI workshops; a regulations webinar; and a stormwater action plan with model stormwater regulation.
