A Development of Regional Impact (DRI) is a development that a local land use board  determines as potentially having a regional impact based on factors including relative size or number of units, proximity to neighboring municipalities, transportation  networks, emissions such as light, noise, smoke, odors or particles, proximity to aquifers or surface waters, and shared facilities such as schools or solid waste facilities. A DRI determination allows the Regional Planning Commission to serve as an abutter to the project and ability to comment on the plan. For more information see this handout.

Municipal or Local Planning, generally, is the understanding a community of today, envisioning how a community wants to be in the future, and determining how to get there. Regional Planning utilizes a focus on a larger region of many communities to shape a collaborative and cohesive vision for the region.
